According to research Transitions Healthy Sight Survey 2010, which was released to coincide with World Sight Day on October 14, 2010, only a third (34%) of South African parents who are actively protecting their children's eyes from the dangers of ultraviolet (UV).
It is known that, the child's eyes crystalline lens is not able to filter out UV rays. With the accumulation of damaging effects of UV rays, the exposure for a year can cause bad eyesight problems.
Among the adverse effects due to the accumulation of UV rays on the eyes as the emergence of onset (the symptoms) early cataracts, and macular degeneration or reduction in visual acuity problems that are likely to cause loss of central visual function in later life.
This is why children is recommended to do regular eye examinations during their eyes continue to change and evolve. Examination is also required to check the eye disorders such as myopia, hypermetropia, and astigmatism, all of which can impact on a child's ability to learn and perform in the classroom.
